Somatic Therapy
Somatic Therapy is an evidence-informed, body-based approach that focuses on the connection between the mind and body. Unlike traditional talk therapies that emphasize only thoughts and emotions, somatic therapy also works with physical sensations, movement, and body awareness as a pathway to healing. Research shows that trauma, anxiety, and stress are often stored in the body, leading to muscle tension, chronic pain, or feeling “stuck.” Somatic approaches help clients release this stored stress and restore a sense of safety and balance.
The goal of somatic therapy is to help individuals become more aware of how their body responds to emotions and experiences, and to use this awareness to regulate the nervous system, process trauma, and promote overall well-being.
Somatic therapy is effective for individuals experiencing trauma, PTSD, anxiety, chronic stress, and psychosomatic symptoms. By involving the body in the healing process, it helps clients access parts of their experience that may not be reached through talk therapy alone. Clients often report feeling more present, calm, and empowered as they learn to listen to their body and regulate their nervous system.
The Structure of Somatic Therapy
1/ Body Awareness
Helping clients notice sensations such as tightness, breath patterns, or posture, and how these connect to emotions.
2/ Grounding and Centering Techniques
Exercises such as mindful breathing, gentle movement, or sensory awareness to bring clients back to the present moment.
3/ Release of Tension
Guided techniques to safely let go of stored physical tension that may be linked to past experiences or ongoing stress.
4/ Movement and Expression
Encouraging safe, intentional movement or gestures as a way of processing and expressing emotions.
5/ Trauma Integration
Gently working through traumatic experiences by noticing how they show up in the body and allowing the nervous system to reset.
